Dragon Within is taking a stand against cyber bullying. By bringing your child into Dragon within for martial arts training, you can be sure to notice a change in your child’s attitude. We take bullying seriously and work with our kids to avoid the bully and avoid being the bully.

What is Cyber Bullying?

Cyber bullying happens over the Internet, cell phone, text messaging, and any other social media source. People are posting pictures, verbal complaints, and hurt full words to each other. It is a serious problem and cannot, should not, be taken lightly.

How to Protect Your Child…

So there are many side effects to cyber bullying. If you notice your child is having episodes of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, failing in school, violence or suicide thoughts, then it is time to take action. Online bullying can have a huge impact on our kids that children may not be aware of.

Examples of Cyber Bullying

Facebook lies; posts, comments or pictures can all cause a huge impact on ones life. . Ever have someone take a picture at the wrong time and make you look like your doing something your really not? Even Photoshop has come a long way and anyone can be changed into anything now.

Tweets, and Instagram can be just as bad. People are vicious.

If I post something on Facebook about Johnny saying he slept with Mary and now has a disease. People will take that and run with it. Now I know that’s graphic but its true and it happens all the time. People are labeled “slut”, “whore”, and all kinds of names for action they may not even have done or actions that got blown out of proportion.

The same goes for texting. Direct or indirect texting can be hurtful. I can send a text to you calling you names or saying ugly things about you, or I can say it to everyone else and let them attack you.

The Impact of Cyber bullying

Any bullying can have a significant impact on kids and adults. Every child responds to bullying in a different. Bullying triggers each person in a different way. The same bully may not have control or effect on one person the same way as another.

Any child may be subject to harassment online. This may cause a child to feel depressed, or have a fear of school. Kids may keep to themselves. They may even have feelings of suicide or start to fall into the path of drugs and alcohol to block out the feeling and to succumb to peer pressure so the bullying will stop.

What can parents do to help make a difference?

A child’s self-esteem can be severely damaged, causing them to feel worthless, powerless and helpless. This hopelessness experienced by a child who is cyber bullied can have significantly negative effects. As parents we need to take a stand and take action. You can do so by following these simple steps.

  • Make yourself available to your child with open communication and lack of judgment
  • Intervene as soon as possible, by contacting the school, parents or police
  • Assist your child in stopping or reducing the harassment, this could be as simple as deleting a Facebook account
  • Buffer the impact of cyber bullying and help your child cope with the negative emotions he or she experiences
  • Keep close attention to all your child’s social media accounts and texts.
  • If you notice something, say something.

If you start to notice any changes in mood, sleep habits, school interests and activities, or a sudden change of friends or even picking up nervous hobbits like nail biting. Don’t wait, talk to your kids, watch the Facebook, and read the text messages. These are our children and this is their future.

For more questions or concerns, please call or visit Dragon Within. We make a huge effort to changing a child’s life, boosting there confidence and work vigorously to bring an end to bullying.

How do I turn to Krav Maga when my life is on the line?

Turning to Krav Maga with Your Life on the Line

In the darkness of every night lurks a potential danger. You may go your whole life without experiencing the terror of an attacker darting out an alley. Or you might find yourself forced to fight or lose your life when an unstable force comes hurtling your way. How will you respond?

No one wants to expect anything of this sort happening to him or her, but you simply can’t guarantee what will come your way, no matter where you are and what you do. Fortunately, Dragon Within teaches that modern self-defense techniques can empower any man, woman and child to beat back an attack and make it to safety in one piece. Krav Maga is the apotheosis of all the self-defense techniques, a gritty skill set learned on the mean streets of pre-World War II Slovakia – where Fascist gangs roamed and anyone who came from the wrong family could end up with a split skull.

The History:

Imi Lichtenfeld invented the technique known as Krav Maga on these violent streets of Eastern Europe. The balance had swung in the favor of Nazis and he had no choice but defend himself or perish. In those days, Lichtenfeld learned how to counter assailants wielding knives, bats, guns, chains and weapons no had even seen before. It was survival of the strongest – survival of a fighter who could bring unparalleled mental toughness to every encounter and overcome physical limitations with sheer cunning and lightning-quick reflexes.

The Vinidication of a Self-Defense Style

Lichtenfeld survived that ugly period from the mid-1930s all the way up to the Nazi takeover of the region. He made it out of Europe on one of the last refugee boats that took to sea. It was a painful experience, but the proof was indisputable: Lichtenfeld was a survivor and his technique had worked. Upon settling in Israel after the war, the IDF quickly made a place for him in special forces training.

Protection You Can Trust

Incorporating these survival techniques to suit modern times took less refining than you might think. The same concept applies to modern-day muggings. You are walking down the street and you happen to notice a shadow moving in an alleyway. No one is on the street. As you approach, you see movement. An attacker jumps out…are you ready to engage, or do you feel hopeless?

Dragon WIthin teaches that with Krav Maga training under your belt, you will be ready to meet the challenge and repel the attack. Whether you know it or not, quick action in times like these can save your life. You never know when an unhinged attacker will decide he or she wants to jeopardize your life. Knowing how to disarm an assailant in rapid-fire movements could be the difference between waking up in a hospital or walking home unscathed.

Living in fear is no way to respond to the challenges of this world. Krav Maga is not a system designed to get you asserting yourself in violent situations. It is a technique meant to reassure you. It is confidence, pure and simple. When your life is on the line, you’ll know you are ready to respond.

Don’t wait for the moment when you are caught unprepared. Act now and get your free private lesson to see for your self the difference between a prepared person and an unprepared person.

What if my child is a victim of being bullied?

Martial Arts Benefits Adults

Are your children excited to go back to school? Or are they afraid of being bullied? Here at Dragon Within, we take bullying seriously. We can help teach your child the respect, discipline, and confidence they need in school.

Let me address what bullying is:

Bullying, in a nut shell, is a form of intimidation or domination toward someone who is perceived as being weaker. It’s almost like we are living in the jungle with a pack of wolves fighting over alfa male. We do all sorts of harmful acts to show our dominance and take what we want by force.  Typically as kids, the only thing we want is make the other child feel humiliated. Usually this is because we are insecure for some reason. There are different types of bullying. While some may think that bullying mainly consists only of physical domination, the fact of the matter is that there are verbal and emotional forms of bullying as well. And, with the rise of the Internet, there are now instances of children being bullied online through email, chatrooms and on Facebook. It is even possible to be bullied through text messaging on a cell phone. Chid bullying can happen in any of these forms. It’s not like in the 90’s when you had to go knock door to door to bully someone, now they make it easy for you.

For the most part, boys prefer to use physical intimidation tactics in their bullying. They will use physical aggression to force others to do what they want, or to feel in charge of a situation. Something about testosterone I would imagine. Girls, on the other hand, typically use more of a subtle approach. They stick to teasing, name calling, and passive aggressive methods. None the less it still hurts the same.

so how many ways can someone bully your child?

So why do kids bully other kids?

They may be abused or neglected at home. They may not have parents that get involved in their life or well being. And how well do our school spread knowledge about bullying and taking a stand?

Let’s break down some numbers shall we?

  • 60% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying.
  • 86% of students said, “other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them” causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in the schools.
  • 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.
  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.
  • Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University
  • A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying
  • 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide, according to the study above
  • According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying
  • One third of teens reported being bullied while at school
  • About 20 percent of teens had been made fun of by a bully, 18 percent of teens had rumors or gossip spread about them, 11 percent were physically bullied, such as being shoved, tripped, or spit on, 6 percent were threatened, 5 percent were excluded from activities they wanted to participate in, 4 percent were coerced into something they did not want to do, and 4 percent had their personal belongings destroyed by bullies
  • 4 percent of teens in this study reported being the victims of cyber bullying
  • Most bullying occurred inside the school, with smaller numbers of bullying incidents occurring outside on the school grounds, on the school bus, or on the way to school
  • Only about a third of bully victims reported the bullying to someone at school
  • About 2 of every 3 bully victims were bullied once or twice during the school year, 1 in 5 were bullied once or twice a month, and about 1 in 10 were bullied daily or several times a week
  • In this study, females and white students reported the most incidents of being the victims of bullying
  • 44 percent of middle schools reported bullying problems, compared to just over 20 percent of both elementary and high schools

Signs of child bullying

Are you like many other parents out there who are concerned for our children’s safety in school? There are many signs that indicate your child is a victim of bullying.

Also try to be alert on if your child is the one doing the bullying at school:

If your child is the one being bullied, you need to help them as soon as possible. Don’t wait. Try talking to them.

  1. Let them know that you can go together, to school authorities to see what can be done in terms of mediation, and in terms of increased attention paid on the school grounds.
  2. Encourage the child to avoid the child bully, and seek help from a teacher or trusted adult when necessary.
  3. Practice being assertive and asking the bully to leave the child alone.
  4. Encourage your child to be with true friends – bullies are less likely to pick on children who are in a group.
  5. take up a martial arts class to teach confidence, self discipline, respect, and much more.

Please help Dragon Within Martial Arts spread the word about bullying. Talk to as many people as you can. We are hosting an anti-bully workshop that is free to your child. We want to help teach every kid the importance of knowing the signs of bullying. We need to stop this and together we can.

Join us November 22nd from 2-4 for a free community event. We will be teaching anti-bully techniques and how to get away from someone who is bullying your child.

Martial arts has always been used for athletes to compete via combat, but is also a fantastic way for people to exercise. One of the most popular martial arts today, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), is a multidimensional martial art that can really put your body through a tough work-out. Unlike standard exercise routines, you don’t have to exercise each individual muscle group; instead, you merely spend 20 minutes “rolling” (the term used for practicing, or sparring). After just 20 minutes of rolling with a partner and engaging in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your entire body will have received a work out that would have otherwise taken you hours.

Because most of BJJ is spent on the ground, you will end up putting lots of weight and pressure on your feet, knees, and thighs; especially if you are in top position. On the bottom, you may think that you have it easy being that you can lay on your back, but this is not the case. High-level BJJ practitioners do not in fact lay flat on their back. As relaxing as it may seem, this is a very bad flaw in technique. You want to be perched up, at least slightly, in order to spring into action. This requires a lot of core strength sourcing from your abs to remain in ready position when on your back.

In other positions it’s your arms that will get a work out. Much of BJJ comes down to “hand-fighting” which is the strategical battle that goes on between you and your opponents hands. Constantly fighting your opponent’s upper-body strength while attempting to maintain proper wrist control is a very physically demanding task.

Even though most BJJ matches are not spent on the feet, it does physically pose equally as intense. You will often tie up with your opponent in search of takedowns that could come from various wrestling techniques, or perhaps a variety of different Judo throws. Whichever means you seek out to attempt to get your opponent on the ground will prove physically demanding. It’s not easy throwing something your size and weight around; especially when it is fighting back.

BJJ provides an all-in-one package for those wanting to combine core workouts with upper-body and most importantly, a lot of fun. BJJ not only exercises the body, but also the mind. Most BJJ matches are fought as if they are chess-matches; it comes to sharp technique and proper positioning that wins or finishes matches. If you’re looking for a martial art that will benefit your body in multiple ways, BJJ is an excellent choice.

The popularity of the UFC and the massive growth of the tournament circuit has led many to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as a means of taking part in competition. This is all well and good, but there was a day when BJJ was taught primarily as a self-defense art.

You always have to be capable of defending yourself in today’s day and age. Learning BJJ can prove to be one of the best arts you can study when dealing with the realities of serious self-defense scenarios. Remember in any self-defense situation, there is always the potential for a grave injury or even a fatality. When you are on the ground you will find yourself in a dire situation because you are prone to suffering from a blunt trauma injury to the head as the result of kicks or repeated punches. Such an attack could lead to the aforementioned fatality.

While there are definitely no easy answers or solutions to any self-defense situation, learning BJJ can definitely help you survive an assault that leaves you on the ground. The most obvious reason would be the fact that it helps you move on the ground effectively and efficiently.  You won’t have any wasted motion that does little more than tire you out. You also will be able to move with an eye on proper defensive maneuvers that are designed to protect you from any serious potential injury.

What further contributes to the value of BJJ as a self-defense art, would be the fact that it is an art based on leverage as opposed to strength.  You do not want to combat a bigger and stronger assailant with force, since you will likely lose such an encounter. However, if you use leverage and the law of physics, you will find it possible to address such a tough attacker in a manner that actually uses the opponent’s strength against him.

One other thing that does need to be mentioned would be the fact that BJJ puts a great deal of emphasis on chokes which are perfect for dealing with a larger and more powerful opponent. No matter how strong a person may be, if a choke is properly sunk in then the person is going to go to sleep – i.e. pass out.  BJJ will teach you how to choke someone out as well as get in the position where you actually can do so.

And yes, BJJ is an excellent art for getting someone under control without having to hurt them. In many self-defense situations, this approach would be the preferred one since not all altercations revolve around hurting someone.  For example if your older brother or spouse tried to pin you on the ground, you will learn and practice ways to remain safe and in control, without inflicting major injury.

Granted, it is still a good idea to study striking and even weapons based arts for self-defense like Krav Maga or Thai Kickboxing, but BJJ does fill in a host of gaps in your self-defense game. Most people just do not know how to properly defend themselves on the ground.  By practicing BJJ, you too can learn how!

The New Year is here!   Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, and Thai Kickboxing classes are turnt up for the New Year, New Body Fitness Program.  Goals have been set, and sweat has been dripping.  The intensity is there but the question remains; what does it take to keep it there all year long? What will it take to follow through with your New Year’s Resolutions?

1.) BE FOCUSED.  Tony Robbins says, “there is power in clarity.”  Most of the New Year motivation arises out of being focused on what you truly want.  More importantly, knowing why you want it.  You must develop clarity if you are going to follow through with your goals.

It’s been said, “Discipline without direction is drudgery.”  You have to be clear on what you are trying to accomplish, and why you want to accomplish it.  Many people don’t accomplish their goals because they become distracted.  They become caught up in what Stephen Covey calls the “thick of thin things”.  They become distracted by the busyness of life.  They don’t mean to do this, but many times urgent pressing matters takes precedence over things we think can wait till later.  The problem is that we never get around to those things.  We tend to deal with the urgent things of the moment, things that wont matter in five years,  and we never get around to following through on things that will have an impact on the quality of your life five years from now.

If you want to follow through on those goals, I mean really follow through and make this year your best year ever, then step one is to develop clarity. Questions you should write down are:  What do you want to accomplish?  Why do you want to accomplish it?  Be specific.  Don’t just say you want to get in better shape.  How many pounds do you want to lose?  What do you want your body fat to be?  After answering these questions on paper you can show your instructors and together we can help keep you and your fitness program stay focused on accomplishing these goals.

2.) BE FIRED UP!  Motivation gives us the emotional gas in our tank to continually follow through with our goals.  Attitudes are caught before they are ever taught.  The best way to stay motivated is to be around other people who are highly motivated.   By coming to class you are doing this first step by surrounding yourself with other motivated people.  Many people will become discouraged when go home and their motivation to stay fit wears off.  They think something is wrong with them because they don’t “feel” motivated.  Motivation is like taking a warm bath.  Naturally over time, the bath cools off unless you keep adding hot water.  By consistently coming to class and being around highly motivated people, that is like constantly adding hot water.  It charges you up and refuels your emotional tank.

3.) GO THE DISTANCE.  Starting is good. In fact, it’s very good.  The journey to achieving your black belt starts with your first step of showing up to your first class. After coming to class, day by day you begin to realize that finishing is even better.  You have to set your mind on the distance of the race.  Accomplishing your goals is not a sprint.  Its not about how fast you can get there.  Its more about consistently taking specific action over time.

Plan and prepare for the distance of the race.  What adjustments do you need to make in your schedule so that you can CONSISTENTLY be in class over a long period of time.  What adjustments do you need to make in your lifestyle so you can CONSISTENTLY follow through with new eating habits.  You must set your eyes, mind, and spirit on the longevity of the race.   Learn to develop a steady, methodical pace.  Many people who “go all out” on their goals never end up following through, because they commit to a pace they simply can’t maintain.  Realize that accomplishing your goals is more like a long distance race than a sprint.

Martial Arts class is designed to keep you learning new skills so that over time you will move up by achieving a new belt.  Wether its Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, or Thai kickboxing you will earn a higher rank (belt) by regarding the fitness program as a long distance race and consistently coming to class over time.

Let’s go the distance and make 2014 your best year ever!!!

Dedicated to your success,

-Dragon Within Martial Arts

Refining Your BJJ Game

Training in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) is a lot of fun because there is so much variety to it. There are many different ways in which you can develop your self-defense and fitness program into the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jistu. This variety of BJJ beginnings help create a unique competitive edge as you progress within the art.  For example, depending on how you start BJJ, you may naturally be good at a specific element of it.  Some competitors may become known for their guard, while others will have a fantastic top game.  From there, different styles of practicing the art may arise.  For example, you may prefer grappling with Gi practitioners, or even with no Gi specialists, or you may even join in with all those who just have a talent for the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Every BJJ artist holds a different journey and therefore becomes their own unique BJJ competitor.

Again, there is a lot of choice available to you within the art and you can develop as a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) competitor in many different ways. This is definitely a good thing but there is a drawback that can sneak up on you if you are not careful. That drawback would be falling into the trap of accumulation.

What is accumulation? It is the art of being a technique collector. As the name suggests, being a technique collector refers to learning an enormous amount of moves on a superficial level. Refining the material and learning about the fine points never occurs. The nature of trying to learn something new all the time makes it next to impossible to refine material. Basically, “refining” means performing the same material over and over again to know, and understand it on a deeper level.

Why do so many beginners wish to accumulate so much? It is just the exciting nature of being a beginner. Everyone that starts out in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) wants to see more and more of the art.

There is also a lot of peer pressure that comes from wanting to buy the top new DVDs offering the classic moves of a top BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Certainly, viewing such material is a smart move. However, trying to memorize it in a week and then moving on to new material a week later just simply is not be the best strategy to follow.

Since refinement requires a lot of repetition, many will wonder if it is a boring process. The answer is no because the deeper your understanding grows of the art, you will find the deeper the power grows within your take downs and submissions.  You will learn there is always something new to learn about a particular move, and refining that move you will create an entirely new power within yourself. An arm-bar could take a lifetime to study and still only the surface of the art will be scratched.

If you want a little motivation for refining your BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) game, all you need to do is accept the fact that all the top players do this to be at the top. This is why you don’t see sloppy fighters throwing everything at an opponent. Rather, you will see fighters with solid, tight games that are focused and their performances are very controlled and specific. All that comes from refinement. So, refine your BJJ game and become a top fighter!

Martial arts are great as spectator sports and a good way to get fit, but they really come into their own when they are used in self-defense – undoubtedly the ultimate result for many of them. This list looks at ten of the best martial arts for if you are especially interested in defending yourself against attackers.

10. Kickboxing

9. Karate

8. Aikido

7. Wing Chun

6. Jiu Jitsu

5. Jeet Kune Do

4. Western Boxing

This hybrid mixes Jiu-jitsu’s standing throws and strikes with ground fighting, which emphasizes joint manipulation and overall control of the opponent, effectively ending a fight very quickly. The larger the attacker, the more easily he can be grappled off his feet, using his center of gravity against him.

2. Keysi Fighting Method

It is Israel’s national martial art, developed largely by Imi Lichtenfeld,  for the purpose of street survival. It incorporates Western boxing punches, Karate kicks and knees, Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ground fighting, Jiu-jitsu throws and grappling, and most importantly, “bursting,” adapted from Wing Chun. This is a simultaneous defense/attack: instead of blocking an attack and then delivering a response, you block the attack and deliver a response at the same time, i. e., block with the left arm and push forward with the legs, striking with the right fist to the throat, all simultaneously.

Also stressed are attacks to vulnerable body parts: the eyes, throat, and groin.  Emphasis is also placed on disarming attackers with both knives and handguns, and turning these weapons on the attacker. It also exclusively trains hand-eye coordination, until defense becomes second nature and does not require thought. And a good Krav Maga instructor can teach all of this to anyone, regardless of athletic prowess.

Is Krav Maga just for self-defense?

Although Krav Maga was designed for street self-defense and hand-to-hand combat, today it is becoming a popular way to stay in shape. Krav Maga, the  martial art of the Israeli army, has been used for the training regimen of choice of many of Hollywood’s top stars such as: Ashton Kutcher, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez— and now, it’s coming to Salem Mass, so it’s available for you too.

People who train in Krav Maga aren’t just learning practical self-defense skills to be able to protect themselves in any situation–they are losing weight, they are gaining confidence and they are getting healthy in a fun way.

So what about Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is an incredibly functional, realistic form of self-defense, however its added benefits are beneficial for anybody looking to get in shape with an awesome cardio workout and toned functional muscles.  It will help build your mental health with personal empowerment, balance and confidence that you will be able to stay safe in virtually any situation.  Although, the art of Krav Maga isn’t necessarily designed for these benefits alone; they are by products.  The principals behind Krav Maga is to be able to fight while fatigued during combat or a street altercation.   You must be able to push yourself to your limits and beyond.  With that as a building block to Krav Maga; needless to say,  the class will be intense exercise.

Krav Maga is:

Simplicity– It is designed for people to learn the techniques quickly because they are based on natural body movements.  This makes it simple for anybody to learn and enjoy the benefits.

Aggressiveness– In a real life self-defense situation; you need explosive power, and aggressiveness!  The curriculum of Krav Maga, the intensity and aggressiveness of the martial art alone translates into burning lots of calories fast.

Fun- With regular exercises, it’s easy to get bored with your same old work out regime.  Krav Maga is a fast-paced, fun and interesting way to stay in shape and alter your body and mind for the better.
